Resort review · Riviera Maya, Mexico
If Desire Pearl is the retreat, Desire Riviera Maya is the party — the livelier, more social, higher-energy of the two couples-only Desire resorts, and the one most first-timers should book. Here's the honest review: what's great, what to expect, the room to pick, and the week that makes or breaks the trip.
Desire Riviera Maya is a couples-only, clothing-optional, adults-only all-inclusive in Puerto Morelos — the original and livelier of the two Desire resorts. Expect a social, flirtatious atmosphere, a buzzing pool and jacuzzi scene, the strongest nightlife of the two, and the famous Playroom.
It's the easier resort to walk into as a first-timer: the social energy makes the experience click fast. Rooms are comfortable rather than lavish — if you want bigger rooms and quiet, that's its neighbor, Desire Pearl.
Desire Riviera Maya sits on a quiet beach in Puerto Morelos, between Cancún and Playa del Carmen, about a 30–45 minute private transfer from Cancún airport (CUN). Its sister resort, Desire Pearl, is just minutes away on the same stretch of sand — but you book one or the other, and they reward different couples.
The defining quality of Desire Riviera Maya is its energy. It's a tight-knit, mingling, high-spirited crowd, and the resort is built so you bump into people naturally — at the pool, at the swim-up bar, in the jacuzzi, at the nightly themed events. That makes it the more welcoming choice for couples who are new to all this: you don't have to work to find the scene; it finds you. The crowd skews a touch younger and livelier than Pearl's.
The clothing-optional pool is the social engine of the resort, and the jacuzzi is legendary — the flirtiest, highest-energy spot by day and well into the evening. This is where Desire Riviera Maya's reputation is built, and it's the clearest difference from the calmer pool scene at Pearl. If a lively, social poolside is what you're picturing, this is the resort.
Here's the honest part: Desire Riviera Maya's rooms are perfectly comfortable but more modest than Pearl's — and somewhat beside the point. The resort's gravity pulls you out to the pool, the bar and the people; you're not in the room much. If you want a bigger suite, a private hot tub and a balcony to linger on, Pearl is the upgrade. If the room is just where you sleep and change between the pool and the party, RM's rooms are more than enough.
This is where Riviera Maya pulls clearly ahead of Pearl. It has the stronger nightlife — more restaurants, a 24-hour outdoor lobby bar and lounge, a nightclub, and the famous Playroom (a couples-only space adjacent to the club). It's the more complete "going out" experience and the easier place to find a crowd late. As always, the Playroom is entirely optional; plenty of couples never set foot in it and love the week regardless.

The single most useful booking tip for Desire: the week you choose can change the crowd more than the resort does. Desire runs themed nights constantly, and some weeks are group takeovers — a lifestyle group or travel company books a big block and the whole feel shifts to their crowd. That's wonderful if it's your crowd and jarring if it isn't. Check the resort's events calendar for your dates before you book. First-timers usually land softest on a regular, non-takeover week.
Desire Riviera Maya is all-inclusive with several restaurants and a generally well-regarded standard of food and service for a resort of its size. It's busy and social rather than hushed and fine-dining — which suits the crowd. Couples who prioritize the most refined dining and the most attentive service often give a slight edge to the smaller Pearl, but RM holds its own.
Book Desire Riviera Maya if: it's your first time, you want the livelier and more social atmosphere, the Playroom and strong nightlife appeal, and you'll happily trade a bigger room for the better scene.
Book Desire Pearl instead if: you want space, quiet, the nicer rooms and the bigger pool, and a romantic-retreat pace. We break the choice down fully in our Desire Riviera Maya vs. Desire Pearl comparison.
